Andy Warhol turned the problem of a messy studio into a decades-long artwork.

He regularly swept letters, photographs, receipts, clothes and everyday objects into cardboard boxes.

He sealed, dated and stored the boxes, calling them Time Capsules.

More than six hundred survived, preserving both art-world history and the apparently unimportant details of daily life.

The detail changes the usual picture of Andy Warhol. A famous life can look inevitable from a distance, but close up it is built from experiments, accidents and small decisions.

Creative work can transform physical limits and ordinary objects into a new language.
